Vathi / Avlis
The ancient city extended north of today's Vatheos Avlis.
Sanctuary of Artemis Avlideia near Mikro Vathi. Under the floor of the 5th century BC church an arched building of the 8th century BC was found with geometric ceramics. East of the temple, there is the covered "holy fountain" with steps. To the southwest, a Hellenistic complex of ceramic workshops (3rd - 2nd century BC) was found and, close to them, a guest house. In late Roman times (4th century AD) hot baths were built on the site of the temple. The sanctuary was destroyed in 396 AD. from the invasions of the Goths. Artifacts from the sanctuary (such as statues of Artemis and Hekate) are on display at the Thebes Museum.
