Sanctuary of Apollo Ptoou
It is located on Mount Pelagia (ancient Ptoon) at an altitude of 370 m. It was an important cult center with pan-Hellenic influence, mainly in the archaic times (7th - 6th century BC). The temple of Apollo (first phase archaic, then Hellenistic), two parallel arcades, a guest house for pilgrims and the spring (Perdicovrysi), where the purification of the drinkers was performed and the oracles of the god were given, were excavated. Numerous votive offerings were found, including tripods, bronze objects and marble statues of Kouros (in the National Archaeological Museum and The Thebes Museum). At Kastraki, on the road that leads from Akraifnio to Ptoon, relics from the small shrine of the local hero healer Ptoos, whose cult predated Apollo, were discovered.
