Akraifnion / Akraifia
The city was inhabited from the 8th century BC until late Roman times (3rd - 4th c.). It extends at the foot of the high Skopia (or Vigliza) hill. At its top is the late classical (4th century BC) and Hellenistic fortification of the acropolis. The wall of the lower city is preserved on the N. and W. slopes of the hill. Hellenistic temple, perhaps of Dionysus, near the church of Agios Georgios, where architectural members and inscriptions are embedded. There was also a temple of Zeus Sotiros with a large altar in the market. Extensive cemeteries were excavated from the 8th to the 4th c. BC with many categories of finds, among which the vases and figurines of the local Boeotian workshops stand out (some are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Thebes).
