(Skiathos / Skiathos)
The island played an important role in the 8th century BC as an intermediate station for the colonization of the northern Greek area by the Chalcidians. Then the settlement of Paleoskiathos was founded, which is witnessed in the written sources until the 5th and 4th centuries BC. On the site of today's Skiathos, on the E. beach, it developed from the 6th century BC the city of Skiathos with a strong port used by the Greeks in 480 BC. before Artemisius' naval battle with the Persians. In the 1st century BC the king of Pontus Mithridates VI Eupatoras used Skiathos as a base against the Roman possessions in the Aegean.
Episcopal seat until the 6th century. A.D. Ruins of a small early Christian basilica, known as Hagia Sophia, and a baptistery. Early Christian architectural elements built into the Castle gate.
