ANCIENT TEGEA (Archaeological Site) - Arcadia

In the French excavations of the last century, in the area of the Episcopate of Tegea, were revealed: a part of the ancient Theater, a relic of the Stoa of the ancient Agora and two early Christian Basilicas. The rest of the monuments came to light during the recent excavations by the Antiquities Commissioner Dr. Th. Spyropoulos.
The two Early Christian Basilicas discovered by the French professor Berard have disappeared, except for a part of the so-called Thyrsos Basilica, which Orlando published in the year 1953, in the "Bulletin of the Byzantine and Christian Monuments of Greece", and which preserves a mosaic floor with representation of the Rivers of Eden and the Months of the Year. The new excavations, financed by the "BIOHALCO M. N. Stasinopoulos" Foundation, took place during the years 1982-1995.
The most important monuments of the archaeological site are:
1) The ancient theater of the Hellenistic Times
2) Parts of the ancient Agora of Tegea of the Hellenistic and Roman Times
3) Altar of the imperial cult (1st - 4th century AD).
4) Early Christian Basilica (5th - 6th century AD)
5) Parts of the Byzantine settlement (10th - 13th century AD)
