On the south side of the city of Kilkis, between rocky hills and near the Gallikos river, is the archaeological site of Colchis. It is about the ancient settlement of Callicum which was a Roman colony of the 1st BC. century. In the area, in addition to the Roman and early Christian ruins of the settlement, figurines from the Neolithic era as well as tools from the prehistoric era were found which are exhibited in the Kilkis Archaeological Museum. There are also traces of fortification of an unspecified era. The early Christian three-aisled basilica of the 5th AD is considered an important discovery. century which was converted in the 9th century into a monastery catholicon and, after destruction, was repaired in the 11th century. Parts of Byzantine frescoes from the 12th century are preserved inside the church.
