ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF OISYMI

It is the only Macedonian city mentioned in the Iliad. It was founded by Thasios in the third quarter of the 7th century BC as a trading post. In the years of Philip II (356 - 336 BC) the name of the city changes to Imathia and it becomes a Macedonian colony. Ruins of the ancient walled city were located on a hill on the western edge of Nea Peramos, in the bay of Eleftheri. She was known for her "biblical wine". At the top of the hill are preserved the ruins of a monumental temple, perhaps of Athena, from the beginning of the 5th to the 2nd century. BC, and an earlier building of the 6th c. BC. A cemetery with tombs of the 7th, 6th and early 5th centuries BC was investigated on the sand dunes of the beach. Finds are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Kavala.
