It was founded by Thasios in the 7th century BC as a trading post. In 356 BC destroyed by King Philip II, but rebuilt. The ancient city was located on two high hills (Gaidourokastro), 4 km SE. of the village of Karyani. On the northern hill remains of a wall built in the same way. In the south, altars carved into the rock and retaining walls were found.
