To the east of the village of Vergina stretches the prehistoric cemetery of the Aeges. It is an area of about 1000 acres with more than 300 small mounds.
The cemetery was used from the early Iron Age (1000-700 BC) until the Hellenistic times (until the 2nd century BC).
In the prehistoric mounds, the burials were made directly on the ground radially arranged in parallelogram pits: the male ones had weapons as offerings while the female ones had rich jewelry and many vases. It is possible that the clusters of mounds belonged to different genera, while each mound was used by a specific family.
Finds from the burials can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, among which are worth mentioning a copper eight-shaped buckle from a female grave, a copper dotted crown with a solar symbol which also comes from a female grave, as well as a bronze triplet double pelecys that decorated a female grave.
