ANCIENT THEATER OF VERGINA - Imathia

On the west side of the town of Aige, around 50 m from the Palace, is the Theater of Vergina. It is said that he was murdered here in 336 BC. the Macedonian king Philip II during the marriages of his daughter Cleopatra. It is dated to the 2nd half of the 4th BC. century and was in use until the 2nd quarter of the 2nd BC. century where Euripides' Bacchus was presented. The monument was discovered in 1982. The first row of stone pews, the corridors that divide the hollow into nine stands, the stone kennel (groove) surrounding the orchestra as well as stone remains from the stage (background 5.12m long) are preserved. The sloping surface of the hollow, the floor of the orchestra and that of the courtyard of the eastern passage were earthen. In the center of the orchestra (with a diameter of 28.40 m.) the stone foundations of the altar of Dionysus are preserved.
