(Arethusa)
City of ancient Mygdonia, next to Egnatia street. Probably a colony of Chalcidians from Evia. The dramatic poet Euripides died and was buried here. Remains of the ancient city, the wall and the acropolis, on a hilltop near the church of Agia Marina Modiou. Cemetery of the same era. Perhaps the archaic and classical city was located in the area of the neighboring Byzantine castle of Rentina. At the site of the Castle, north of ancient Arethousa, remains of older facilities are preserved, from the Neolithic to the early Christian era.
