Chalcidice

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF POSEIDI

On the sandy and flat Poseidi cape, west of Kalandra, there is a sanctuary of Poseidon. Perhaps founded by Eretrian sailors. The ruins of four cult buildings have been uncovered that abut or lay on top of each other due to lack of space. The oldest is the arched building S from the 11th century BC. Next is the apse C (from the end of the 7th to the beginning of the 6th century BC). Inside it were found many objects that were sailors' tributes to Poseidon. Third chronologically is the arched building E from the end of the 6th to the beginning of the 5th century BC. Finally, in the middle of the 5th c. BC dates the rectangular building A. All the buildings are preserved only up to the height of the foundations. The finds are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
