ANCIENT TINOS (Archaeological Site) - Tinos

On the 6th B.C. century, various settlements develop around the Poles hill (area of the church of Panagia), which together create "Asti". The Aqueduct of Peisistratos (549-542 BC) and the walls are preserved from this time. On the 5th B.C. century, the island is occupied by the Persians (490-480 BC) while in 477 BC allied with the Athenians. On the 4th B.C. century, Tinos is a large urban center, fortified with a strong wall, and an important port. From Aristotle's (384-322 BC) treatise "Tinian Politia" (which has not been preserved) we learn about the prosperity of the city at that time. Also, ancient inscriptions refer to various buildings (which are not preserved today) such as the theater where the Dionysian games were held, the sanctuary of Dionysus, the ancient market, the gymnasium.
