Koufonisia

ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDINGS (Archaeological Site)

According to archaeological findings of the island, Koufonisia has been inhabited since the Prehistoric era. Excavations carried out in the Epano Mylos area and on the east coast of the island revealed important evidence for the early phases of the Cycladic Civilization and many findings from the Hellenistic and Roman years. One of the most important finds in the history of the Cyclades, a pan-shaped vase with a nine-pointed star engraved on it, is kept today in the Museum of Naxos. Koufonisia together with their neighboring island Keros, were important centers of the Cycladic Civilization around 3000-2000 BC.
KATO KOUFONISI
There are archaeological remains on the island. Excavations carried out brought to the surface findings of the early phases of the Cycladic civilization, such as a proto-Cycladic cemetery and buildings of the 3rd millennium BC, as well as remains of the Hellenistic and Roman times. An attraction of the island is the small church of Panagia which is built on the pier, on top of ancient ruins.
PANO KOUFONISI
There is very little historical evidence for Pano Koufonissi from antiquity and the most important evidence for its pre-Christian history is provided by archaeological findings, such as those of the Proto-Cycladic cemeteries and facilities of the 3rd millennium BC. In Pano Koufonissi there are scattered antiquities from historical times as well as traces of ancient dwellings. Excavations carried out brought to the surface finds of the early phases of the Cycladic civilization, the Hellenistic and Roman Times.
