CASTLE OF ANTIPAROS

The castle of Antiparos was built in 1440 and is located near the main square. There is only one entrance to enter, a Gothic gate which is on the south side. It is the only preserved castle in the province of Paros and is still inhabited today. It is not a simple fortification project, but an organized urban complex, one of the most interesting medieval settlements of the Aegean. It consists of 24 two-story houses inside the castle, 24 single-story houses in Xopyrgos and 16 two-story houses in the outer zone. Among the houses there are also three churches. Originally there was a large and massive tower around which successive rings of houses were added, separated from each other by narrow passages (rivers as they are called), so that the houses also formed the outer enclosure of the castle.
