The hill of Ypsili, a little north of Zagora, is home to an extremely extensive geometric settlement which had a strong fortification wall. The settlement continued to be inhabited until the Roman period, as evidenced by building remains found during the excavation. In the settlement, a mega-shaped temple with a double altar from the 6th century BC has also been discovered. Ypsili and Zagora make Andros the most important place for the study of the Geometric period in the Greek islands area and relate it to corresponding elements from Attica and Evia, while underlining the role of the island as a center of control of the maritime routes of the region.
