Paleopolis is the ancient capital of Andros, which flourished from the classical era until the Roman era (6th century BC - 6th century AD). The ancient city was so far down, near the harbor, that its half-submerged jetty can be seen from the village.
The excavations brought to light the massive slate wall with its indentations and successive gates, the ancient Agora and two cemeteries with important funerary sculptures (4th century BC), as well as remains of early Byzantine basilicas. Traces of the ancient jetty can also be seen on the bottom of the sea. In the modern homonymous settlement there is the Paleopolis Archaeological Museum with some of the most characteristic findings from the excavations of the wider area.
