The remains of the ancient city at Kastelli are located on the hill of the same name on an inaccessible mountain top, at an altitude of 440 m, in the east of the island. According to legend, this ancient city was founded in the 8th century BC by Dorians. The fortification of the ancient city is visible as well as extensive remains of its cemetery, on the south-eastern part of the slope. There are also quite a few findings from the Roman period, the heyday of the island, which can be seen scattered in the area. Particularly impressive is the sarcophagus located next to the small historical chapel of Panagia in Dokari.
