ARKSINI (Archaeological Site)

The ancient city of Arkesini was located on the SW side of Amorgos, at the current location of "Kastri" and included the area now called Kato Meria with the villages of Vroutsi and Arkesini.
In Arkesini, which was one of the three cities of the ancient Amorgian Commonwealth, ruins of a proto-Cycladic acropolis and a cemetery have been found on the Kastella hill and a settlement of the 9th-8th century BC at the site of Kastri.
In the neighboring village of Vroutsi, at the location of Ag. John, the ancient acropolis is located. fortified with a strong wall (the ancient Aspis), with the sanctuary of Athena Itonia.
