Finds from a large city of Greco-Roman times. 117 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos, the excavations brought to light a luxurious Minoan palace, the fourth in importance, and rich findings housed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. This palace, which occupied an area of 7000-8000 m2 and included royal apartments, warehouses and various workshops, as well as the neighboring city were destroyed around 1450 BC by a strong earthquake, probably the one that caused the sinking of part of Santorini .

Zakros was a great Minoan naval base. He had developed trade relations with Egypt and the East. From here Minoan products were exported to foreign markets. Today, four Minoan farmhouses, two sanctuaries, cemeteries and burial caves from the Minoan era have been excavated.
