ANCIENT FARMHOUSE (Archaeological Site)

ANCIENT FARMHOUSE (Archaeological Site) - Lefkada

At Pyrgi, on a hill above the village of Poros, in the south-east of the island, the ruins of a tower-shaped farmhouse from the end of the 4th century BC can be seen. (or of the 3rd BC). It is considered the oldest surviving castle. The excavation was carried out in the middle of the 20th century by the German archaeologist Dorpfeld, who supported the theory that Lefkada is identical with Homeric Ithaca. Parts of the rectangular walls (7 m. high) with the stone chipped slabs (2 m. length X 1 m. width X 0.5 thickness) as well as various boulders are visible today in the excavation area. Also preserved near the tower are the ruins of a tank and an ancient olive press (2nd century BC).
