ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF MANTOUDI / KIRINTHOS

Mantoudi / Kirinthos

Pelasgian city mentioned in the Iliad. It is located on a rocky hill, 5 km north of the village of Mantoudi, at the end of Peleki bay, where the Voudoros river flows. On the steep acropolis on the hill of Agios Ilias, parts of the archaic enclosure (6th century BC), the classical and Hellenistic wall with square towers, as well as remains of buildings with traces of roads between them. On the N. side of the hill, a large rectangular building was excavated on a "Cyclopeian" mound (late 8th - late 5th century BC). It was abandoned before the Roman period.
Fortified positions with surviving parts of walls and other buildings are located on the hilltops of the area.
