ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KARYSTOS

Karystos

It was founded by Dryopes during the "dark ages" (11th - 10th centuries BC). Famous was the local green marble (cipollino verde). The ancient city extended below the hill with the medieval castle (Castel Rosso), in today's Paleochora. Remains of the classical fortification are preserved in Platanistos.
A peristyle marble mausoleum with a square plan (middle of the 2nd century AD) was excavated on Myloni beach. On the pediment of the temple-shaped building there is a relief bust (imago clipeata) of the dead Roman official with his horse. At the site Kylindroi ton Mylon, 4 km from Karystos, there are ten unfinished Roman columns from a neighboring marble quarry. Various findings from Karystia (mainly sculptures and inscriptions) and from the "dragon houses" of Ochi and Styron are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum (Giokalio Foundation).
