Dystos

It was founded by Dryopes in the interior of southern Evia, in a marshy lowland area surrounded by mountains.
Several well-preserved remains of the ancient city survive on the slopes of a conical hill, 20 km SE. of Aliveri. The eastern leg of the classical wall with a monumental gate is preserved almost intact, while 11 towers and a tank can be seen. Particularly important for the residential architecture of the classical times are the ruins of the houses of the 5th century. BC, the floor plans of which are completed in their entirety. At the top of the hill there is also a ruined medieval castle.
