TEMPLE OF HERCULES - Thasos

The sanctuary of Herakles is located on the promontory of Evraiokastro, near the sanctuary of Demeter and Koris. The cult of the demigod is related to the Phoenician tradition. The sanctuary, consisting of a large Ionic temple and a 5-room portico, dates back to the 5th BC. century and replaced a smaller temple and house of the 6th BC. h. In the center of the sanctuary, within a paved courtyard, was the altar for the sacrifices. In the propylaea of the sanctuary there is a staircase that leads to a square and is connected to the Agora by a main road. In the Roman era, the arch of Caracalla (2nd century AD) was added to the north side of the square. It is said that in the sanctuary of Heracleus the Spartan general Lysander after his victory against the Athenian fleet in 405 BC, broke his promise of amnesty and slaughtered the Athenians of Thasos.
