Parallel to the northeastern wall of the ancient city of Thassos, on a plateau is placed one of the most famous sanctuaries of the 6th century. BC dedicated to the god of music, Apollo. The colossal half-life statue of the Kriophoros Kouros that greets us today at the Archaeological Museum of Thassos was meant to be a dedication to the god Apollo. Of the ancient marble sanctuary of Pythian Apollo (Pythion) only some retaining walls and fragments of marble remained, some of which were used in later years for the construction of the Byzantine castle and wall.
