SANCTUARY OF POSEIDON

The sanctuary of the god Poseidon (Poseidonion) was discovered in the area north of Dionysios, in the ancient city of Thassos. An enclosure with iso-structure masonry from the end of the 5th century leads to the sanctuary. BC which is located near the Chariot Gate.

The monumental entrance on the west side leads to a free space and consists of two openings. The right opening (of the 4th century BC) bears a double dedication by Xenophanes to Poseidon, the god of the sanctuary. In the central courtyard there is a circular altar, another in the shape of a P and a third rectangular structure. A series of rooms along the south side must have been ceremonial banqueting areas. To the right of the main entrance, on the outside, an altar was found with an altar in the form dedicated to Hera Epilimenia. A statue of Aphrodite Pelagia was also found in the sanctuary.
