SANCTUARY OF PAN

The sanctuary of Panos is located on the road that leads from the sanctuary of Athena to the third peak of the acropolis of the ancient city of Thassos. It is a rural shrine created in a small artificial cave, a semi-circular hollow carved into the rock.

The sanctuary is decorated with a relief in a pedimented frame depicting the god Pan who is reclining and playing a syringa in front of a small herd of goats. The relief should have been carved in the 4th century. BC The god Pan was worshiped as the protector of shepherds but also as the god who controlled Panikos and they accepted offerings from the guards of the Acropolis.
