Thasos

SANCTUARY OF DIONYSOS

At a distance of 100 m. north from the market of ancient Thassos is the sanctuary of Dionysos (Dionysion), which is commemorated at the end of the 5th century. BC by Hippocrates.

The ruins of the sanctuary date back to the 4th and 3rd centuries. B.C., The enclosure of the 4th c. BC is built with buildings of marble stones and surrounds many constructions. Two sponsored monuments erected in the 3rd century were also found near the sanctuary. BC for sponsored matches. Better preserved is the monument in the north-east corner, built on a high plinth and accessible by a staircase. On the facade of the monument and in front of a wall that formed a P was the statue of the god Dionysos, on a base that formed an arc of a circle. The statue was surrounded by 8 other statues, among which were the allegorical representations of Tragedy, Comedy, Dithyrambus and Night. The head of Dionysus and the statue of the Comedy are kept today in the Archaeological Museum of Thassos.
