In ancient times Thassos was one of the ten largest Greek cities, with power due to the wealth of the island in marble, metals, gold, fishing as well as the exploitation of its agricultural production. In Thassos, there are few excavated farmhouses and some, like the one in Marmaromandra, next to the ancient town, do not seem to belong to the type of farmhouse with a tower. We know such from many regions of Attica and the Cyclades. Coexistence of farmhouses with a tower and others without, -something that is obviously related to its function/destination- we also observe elsewhere, such as, for example, in the Black Sea.
The ruins of the farmhouse and the fortified tower located in Schidia of Thassos have not yet been excavated. The ancient Pyrgos and the Farmhouse of Schidi probably date back to the late archaic and early classical years.
Schidia is located in the coastal area of Thassos, in the SE. part of the island, a short distance from Aliki and the remains of the farmhouse and the tower of Thymonia. It is possible that the ancient Pyrgos and Farmhouse of Schidias was related to the exploitation and protection of the quarries and mines of Thassos located on the neighboring peninsula of Aliki
