IALYSOS (Archaeological Site)

Ialyssos has retained the name of the ancient city since the 5th century BC and is of great interest due to the many historical monuments and archaeological finds that have been discovered there.
The ancient city of Ialyssos was one of the three powerful city-states of classical Rhodes. Its citadel was built around the wooded Filerimos hill in a strategic position and with a privileged view. The most important monuments of the archaeological site are the Temple of Athena Poliados, the Doric fountain whose facade has been restored, the Byzantine fortifications on the eastern side of Filerimos hill, built with material from the ancient temple of Athena and repaired by the Knights.
Finally, it is worth visiting the Acropolis of Filerimos, where monuments from the ancient, Byzantine and knightly periods are preserved. In the early Christian period (5th - 6th centuries AD) a three-aisled basilica with an atrium was built, in the northern aisle of which a one-room church was built in the Byzantine years. In the period of the Knighthood, an impressive medieval monastery was built with the church of Panagia tis Filerimou.
