CHELATROS (Archaeological Site)

Traces of four Minoan settlements (Khelatro bay, southwest Kasos): For the Minoan maritime empire, Khelatros was an important anchorage for those starting from Crete and bound for the East. Surface finds of Minoan character (16th - 15th century BC) near the port of Khelatros, show the relationship of the island with Crete. In addition, the entrance to the cave is closed by carved blocks of isostructural style, a fortification construction of the 3rd or 2nd century BC of huge single-piece stones 1.5 m thick. Stairs on the right and left lead down to an opening in the wall, which is the entrance to the cave. The interior is divided in two by a wall, which is of later construction.
