SETTLEMENT OF KASTELLA

(Vathi, north of Metochi) - An important ancient settlement of about fifty buildings of various dimensions, with a rectangular plan. The habitation of the area begins during prehistoric times and reaches up to classical times. Exceptional finds testify that the inhabitants of Kastella, probably Cares, maintained trade relations with the Asia Minor coast and the surrounding islands. The settlement was abruptly abandoned after a raid in the first half of the 5th century BC. In its upper part there was perhaps a sanctuary or residence of the lord of the settlement, while there are no traces of fortifications.
