The ancient fortress of Ebola is located north of Vathys village in Kalymnos. dates back to the Hellenistic period and is a building of the 4th to 3rd century BC.
During the 6th AD century, the imposing early Christian basilica of Taxiarchis was built in the northern part of the fort, for its construction building material from the ancient fort was used. During the 12th-13th century AD, the small church of Taxiarchis was built in the southeast part of the early Christian church in the style of a basilica.
For centuries the fort was a refuge and a place of resistance and protection for the inhabitants of the valley, during raids.
