The acropolis was inhabited for a long time from the latest Neolithic to the Mycenaean period (5th - 2nd millennium BC). In the surrounding hills, extensive cemeteries of chambered tombs from the Mycenaean era (1400 - 1200 BC). At the mouth of the Erasinos stream is the sanctuary of Artemis Bravronia, which was abandoned due to a flood in the 3rd century BC. The life of the sanctuary starts from the geometric times (10th - 8th century BC), but the first temple must have been built in the archaic times (7th - 6th century BC). Today, the ruins of the classic Doric temple (beginning of the 5th century BC) are preserved on a strong stepped rampart wall. Near the temple, inside the rock, the foundations of a small building were found, considered to be the tomb of Iphigenia. In the last quarter of the 5th c. BC a large P-shaped gallery was built. Today it has been restored and identified with the "Amphipoleion", i.e. the habitat of the little girls (called "Bears") who served in the sanctuary. At the entrance to the site, remains of a stone bridge on stilts. The local Museum exhibits representative offerings from the sanctuary (figurines, relief paintings, vases) as well as the finds from the Mycenaean cemeteries of Perati and Hamolia, and the geometrical cemetery of Anavyssos. In the area there are the ruins of a three-aisled early Christian basilica with a small circular baptistery (5th century). Rich decoration: marble floors, walls with colorful painted decoration imitating orthomarbling, remains of orthomarbling in the baptistery. remains of a stone bridge on stilts.
